Maharashtra govt slashes charges for COVID-19 tests by private labs

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday stated that the federal government has decreased the charges of the COVID-19 tests performed by private laboratories from Rs 4,500 to Rs 2,200. Talking to PTI, Tope stated the reducing of charges for the tests would offer a aid to the individuals. “Rs 2,200 will be charged for collecting the swabs through viral transport media (VTM) from hospitals, while it would cost Rs 2,800 for collection of swab from home.

Earlier, the charges were Rs 4,500 and Rs 5,200 respectively,” he stated.

The revised charges are the utmost these labs can cost. District collectors can negotiate with private labs to cut back the charges additional, Tope stated.

“If the private labs charge more than the prescribed upper limit, legal action would be taken against them,” he stated, claiming that the brand new charges would be the lowest within the nation.

The minister stated that at current, there are 91 labs within the state for COVID-19 testing and about 4 to 5 are within the pipeline.

According to him, the federal government had final week shaped a four-member committee to repair the charges of COVID-19 tests performed by authorised private laboratories within the state.

State Health Assurance Society CEO Sudhakar Shinde headed the committee, which had Joint Director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research Ajay Chandanwale and Grant Government Medical College and Hospital professor Amita Joshi as its members and Health Services director as member secretary.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has allowed 44 authorities and 36 private laboratories within the state to hold out coronavirus tests. While the tests are free on the government-run laboratories, the ICMR had mounted charges at private labs at Rs 4,500.

The committee was shaped because the ICMR had conveyed to barter with private labs and revise the charges. The kits required for conducting the tests have been being imported earlier when the charges of tests at private laboratories have been mounted by the ICMR.

However, because the kits are being manufactured within the nation itself, the ICMR had conveyed to carry talks with the private laboratories and repair the check charges.
